Who’s Hot
Offense
David Wright-NYM
In his last 11 games, Wright is 21/41 and finally starting to live up to his status as a top 5 pick. He also has 6 SB’s and 13 RBI in the same span. Before you start getting all giddy, keep in mind that through that span he has 0 HR’s and only 7 XBH’s and still has only 3 HR on the season. The power has still not come around, but at least he is showing signs of life.
Victor Martinez-CLE
V-Mart is batting .500 in his last 8 games and has his average sitting at .400 for the season. I don’t see Victor winning any batting titles this season, but he is reclaiming his status as an elite hitting catcher. His dual C/1B eligibility makes him even more valuable, but time will tell if he will stay behind the plate or move to 1B full time.
Justin Morneau-MIN
Morneau got his first taste of the homer happy Yankee Stadium this past weekend and looked like he was back in the HR derby. He finished the four game set with 9 hits and 3 HR in 16 AB’s. Unfortunately, the Twins didn’t win any of those games, but unless you own Glen Perkins, that is irrelevant for fantasy purposes.
Pitching
CC Sabathia-NYY
CC seems to have finally turned a corner, or maybe he finally found some good restaurants in NY City. Whatever the case is, he’s pitching like he deserves the huge contract he got from New York this offseason. In his last 3 starts he has given up 3 ER in 24 IP while striking out 20. If he could just learn how to wear his hat, he’d be perfect.
Justin Verlander-DET
Since April 27th, Verlander is 3-0 with an ERA of 0.92. He also has 44 strikeouts in that span to put himself in a tie for the major league lead with Jake Peavy. Some people believe this is a fluke and he will not keep it up. With less ER allowed in that time period then Zack Greinke, I’m willing to bet Verlander is finally back to his 2006-2007 form.
Trevor Hoffman-MIL
The career leader in saves just keeps on ticking. After missing the first 3 weeks of the season Hoffman has come on to pitch in 11 games this season for Milwaukee. He has 10 saves and not a single run allowed. He hasn’t even given up a hit since May 4th. This is a guy who had trouble finding work this offseason. I’d imagine there are a number of teams beating their head against the wall right about now.
